Cool-phase V’s Air-con Air-conditioning is considered by many to adversely affect the environment, through the use of harsh chemicals and high energy use. Many companies, specifiers and architects alike are now seeking environmentally friendly alternatives. The major contributing factor that AC has on the environment can be the power consumption required to operate. Typically AC systems require kilowatts of power to run. The refrigerant used within AC systems can also be extremely hazardous to the environment. Older systems typically use R22, a Hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC), which has a depleting effect on the ozone layer. It is still used in many AC units being sold today, but due to global government initiatives, is being phased out and replaced with R-410 a HydroFluoroCarbon (HFC). R-410, though it does not deplete the ozone layer contributes greatly to global warming, having over 1000 times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide. Looking at the COOL-PHASE® passive ventilation system it is obvious to see the benefits of such a low energy system. The COOL-PHASE system in its current configuration uses an average power consumption of approximately 40W. At current energy prices, it will cost in the region of 10p per day to run. In addition to this, the system is also constructed from recyclable materials, including the FSC approved plywood casing. The most significant factor is our choice of PCM, which is both recyclable and does not cause detrimental effects on the environment. At the end of its serviceable life, the PCM is simply bulked with other fibrous material such as hedge cuttings and composted. In addition to the environmentally positive aspects of COOL-PHASEe, there are obvious health benefits associated with the system. Mechanical air-conditioning is a misnomer, as typically no conditioning of air takes place, just the cooling of air. Unlike the majority of AC systems, which provide only recirculation, the COOL-PHASE system will provide fresh and recirculated air, but with inbuilt CO2 control, the COOL-PHASE system will maintain air quality at all times. Low CO2 levels are proven to increase concentration and well being and these levels are adjusted automatically with COOL-PHASE, providing true air-conditioning.
